Hollywood - Therapy comes in many forms at the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center, Inc./Southeast Focal Point . This year music, art, gardening and yoga are being offered to the frail elderly, many of whom suffer from Alzheimer's disease program at the center's Adult Day Care program.
Melodies from the 1940's, folk songs and love songs are being sung during the music therapy classes led by Janice Gillies, a board certified Music Therapist. "Music touches people in a very profound way and helps preserve memories, so it is wonderful to offer this to our seniors. The smiles and joy on their faces enforces that this is an important aspect of their daily activities at the Meyerhoff Center," says Beth A. Allen, Executive Director at the Center.
Due to additional private funding the center was able to add chair yoga, gardening therapy and art therapy to the busy schedule that the seniors are offered at the center. "We are growing lettuce, tomatoes and peppers in special waist high gardens. The clients will soon be eating their home grown salads!" added Allen. "We are grateful to the Vasquez Family Foundation Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward County, the Wolpowitz Family Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation, the Redwoods Foundation and the Young Leadership Division of Jewish Federation of Broward County for their support of these enrichment therapies to our program."
For 31 years, the Meyerhoff Center has offered the Adult Day Care in the greater Hollywood area where the center continues to "Make a Difference" in the lives of seniors each day.
